My name is Dennis King and in 1987 I created The King Construction Company to meet the demand for a high-quality, small-project oriented remodeling company that focused on superior customer communication. The concept was a great success and the company grew quickly and steadily even through the early 1990's recession. My customer's needs grew over time and so did my company as we found ourselves managing and building larger and more complex projects. Projects such as whole house remodels and large scale additions became the norm and "my" small company became "our" large company with the addition of office managers, field supervisors, a large in-field labor force, etc. As the company grew I began to get pulled farther away from the day-to-day customer interaction that I valued so much when my company was a small operation. I missed sitting down and collaborating with my customers, kicking back and forth ideas that would customize their project to their needs and make it the best that it could be for them. I missed taking their ideas and putting pencil to paper and giving them the designs that would give them their first glimpse of what their project would eventually look like. And I missed working in the field- using my hands to help build the projects that my customers would spend years and years enjoying.
So I had to change things. Over the course of a few years I shrank down the workforce until I got back to the small manageable personable ENJOYABLE company that I once had and I have not looked back since. Lesson learned: "Bigger is not always better".
